What is a burn?

What is a burn?

A burn occurs when heat, chemicals, sunlight, electricity, or radiation damage skin tissue. Most burns occur accidentally. There are different degrees of burns. To understand them, you first need to understand the skin.

The skin is the largest and heaviest organ in the human body (between 4 and 10 kilos in adults, and nearly 2 m² in surface area). The skin is divided into three main parts : a superficial part, which is the thinnest (epidermis) ; the thickest inner part (dermis) ; and finally a deeper layer (hypodermis).

Let's return to burns : these range from 1st degree (superficial epidermis affected), to 2nd degree (epidermis and part of the dermis affected, a partially hard burn), to 3rd degree (destruction of the epidermis and dermis, a completely hard burn) to 4th degree (the highest degree, affecting all layers of skin, tendons, muscles and even bones). Depending on the intensity, the degree is classified as either superficial or deep.

Finally, there can be internal burns and this is the case when, for example, the burned areas are located inside the respiratory tract.
